CAPTAIN BASCH FON RONSENBURG was once a respected captain in the Dalmascan army. Straightforward and unwavering, in either field of strength or loyalty, he nevertheless tags dry humour and idealist nature as occasion demands; even loyalty sullied in name serves only to have Basch dismissive of the word on the street, and fight even further to make good of Dalmasca's rebirth. |
In times of war, he became bearer of ill news with a dead Nabradian prince slung over his feathered mount upon return from the killing fields of Nalbina; a branded traitor and murderer of Vaan's brother and regicide, dismissed of the claim that the king was selling out Dalmasca to the Archadian Empire with the compromising words of a peace treaty. Confirmed dead by word of Marquis Halim Ondore IV of Bhujerba.
So it comes as a complete leftfield when Basch is discovered caged over a pit in the Nalbina prisons and denouncing his twin brother of schemingly deviant ways-- Gabranth, an Archadian Judge, who impersonated Basch to drag the name through traitorous regicide, and left Vaan's brother alive just long enough to bear witness. Vaan has a moment of requisite crazy time before they suspiciously take on Basch as another number to ward off the enemies, affirmation of innocence contested. But through a show of loyalty, and a fighting of the good fight, Basch is pledged the trust of both current company and Vossler, former comrade-in-arms and one of many unsatisfied patriots.
Betrayal is a game played with gusto in Ivalice, though, as Vossler turncoats in the name of Dalmasca's rebirth no matter the cost-- the reality of a small kingdom forever struggling against an empire to regain occupied ground was far too much, and far too bitter. The Dawn Shard-- a royal artifact in Ashe's possession and fragment of Nethicite-- is demanded by Judge Ghis in exchange for not slicing and dicing Balthier; though, as Judge Ghis puts it to test and calls up some freak Mist sucking properties, Fran goes through a moment of Mist-sensitive crazy and the company escapes, only to have Basch take Vossler on, dealing out the power of idealist struggle versus grim reality. Vossler, redeemed by noble defeat, puts faith in Basch for the sake Ashe and Dalmasca before dying his noble defeated redeemed death.
Basch has someone to protect, and something to fight for-- it's what sets him straight and never to fall, even after he and his brother lost their conquered homeland, and parted both loyalties and way. Gabranth, however, gets all twisted inside by the Solidor family machinations for a greater Archadia, and his wish to protect the young prince Larsa gets twisted alongside, too. It takes a near hit on Larsa to get Gabranth all flustered up, and killed in the protective process-- a last promise from Basch to take on Archadian armour to watch over Larsa finally sets things right between brother and brother, even as Basch sees way that the newly coronated Queen Ashe has the strength to stand on her own.
MIST KNACKS: Fulminating Darkness, Ruin Impendent, Flame Purge
BEST EQUIPPED WITH: Heavy Armour; Knight Swords, Swords, Axes/Hammers, Spears
STRENGTHS: Basch is a tank-- he can suck it up like he dishes it out and still come back for more; a bit slow, though, so you might want to sometimes equip with some speed concerns, i.e. replace Heavy Armour with Light Armour, or make use of common weapons that have a more constant rate.
