BALTHIER BUNANSA is made of illegal amounts of cocky bastard and shamelessly mercenary and the constant fiddling of shirtcuffs. A dandy sky pirate who thinks of nothing but profit and keeping his shirt clean and the freedom to fly his beloved skies, Balthier was nevertheless once chained by a past as pasts are wont to do. |
The mechanically gifted son of Doctor Cidolfus Demem Bunansa, a researcher of Nethicite, he bore witness to father's fall into the strange obsessive madness of Nethicite study and Occuria control; Balthier found himself shunted aside and used, made Archadian Judge against his will. The one day it became too much, he took to the skies and ran for what he thought was freedom as the fastest pilot of name. But all the reward digging and carefree living only flew him so far, as Balthier found himself full circle involved in the Nethicite affairs as transport and company to the party, demanding as payement Ashe's wedding ring to live up to his piratin' name.
And yet, running with the Dalmascan faction reveals an honour deep, and Balthier becomes another voice to which Ashe can turn to-- denying the past its stranglehold; overcoming the Nethicite's demand for control, knowing that Ashe has the strength to prevail. His own walk through the fire comes when they confront Cid amidst a moment of powertripping; it does little in the way of reconciliation-- all that's left are hard words to live with, and something akin to hurtful and tangled.
Cheekily constant in his reminders that he's the actual hero of this story, Balthier puts to test the right of heroic intervention when he and Fran do the sacrificially flavoured task of averting an airship and city collision; he entrusts Vaan with his own craft, the Strahl, and jumps ship as Ashe desperately calls out to stop this folly. Save of the day is successful, though, but no sign of Balthier and Fran come in the afterwards until one day the Strahl is stolen, and an invitation for some treasure huntin' good times is left behind with a certain wedding band waiting to be reclaimed.
His last name is certifiably awesome-- Balthier shares it with Mustadio Bunanza, a gunwielding mechanically apt character from Final Fantasy Tactics who special classes as an Engineer. Oh Square Enix, you spoil us rotten.
MIST KNACKS: Fires of War, Tides of Fate, Element of Treachery
BEST EQUIPPED WITH: Light Armour, Heavy Armour; Greatswords, Swords, Ninja Swords, Guns, Crossbows, Bows
STRENGTHS: Balthier is fairly good on grounds of both magic and attack. TOTALLY CLASSES AS AN ENGINEER, so he's been tagged with the party's long range in firearms and secondary support. However, it'll do well to have him learn some sword equip, as those are more common and aren't as restrictive as guns.
FRAN is a warrior of the Viera; or rather, she was once a Viera. A life in the Golmore Jungle with the Voice of the Forest in their ears, the Viera would shun their own if one would forsake it-- such as Fran did, leaving behind her sisters for a life of sky piratin' adventure and the company of one Balthier.
Um, who wouldn't.
Mjrn, the younger sister, would wish to follow Fran's life into the outside, but bitter are Fran's words of alienation and a loss of the Voice that always stays with them. Her return home is nothing but setting the past where it is, and severing ties with the Forest; a hard place to go, but a necessary one-- she is alike a Hume now, alike to the one that took her away and earned the Forest's displeasure.
Sensitive to the movements of Mist as any of her race, Fran is calm and composed at any other time then a freak Mist frenzy, and she's tagged for her wordly knowledge and magical sensing that the rest of the company lacks; senses sharply keen also means getting a crack at a character in seconds flat, so she calls out Larsa Solidor as a good one even with Archadian roots giving doubt.
Fran stays behind with Balthier in his moment of heroic interlude, but falling debris gets her carried out heavily wounded.
MIST KNACKS: Feral Strike, Whip Kick, Shatterheart
BEST EQUIPPED WITH: Light Armour, Mage Armour; Swords, Katanas, Staffs, Rods, Bows
STRENGTHS: Fran is a like a Swiss Army knife-- she levels well in attack and magic, and does excellent work with both, and could totally pop open beer cans with her teeth if she wanted to. Play her as another strong long range attack, with support in magic offense for the elementally inclined enemies.
