MAIN / ABOUT / CONTACT / LINKS

VAAN is a cheerful, cheeky, slightly doofy thieving little bastard who lives fast on his feet in Rabanastre, royal capital of the now occupied Dalmasca; pseudo-guidance comes in the form of Migelo, a kind-hearted Bangaa who took in the boy after he was orphaned by the war.

Vaan's older brother, Reks, was killed for by the supposedly traitorous Basch during the taking of the Nalbina fortress; his close friend and partner is Penelo, who scolds him for his occasionally wayward and childish manners as she gets pulled along by his joyous strength regardless of caution, and rewards him with impromptu glomping in return.

Vaan is a bit of class clown and cheerleader remixed-- he constantly tags everybody for an infectious happy moment, all the while pulling from both Balthier and Basch expressions of hopelessly irritated endearment. ("We can't refer to Basch by name because he's a wanted fugitive." "But can we take along this dude who totally looks like Prince Larsa, because him actually being Larsa is inconceivable?" "I don't think you know what that word means." "SURE THING BASCH.") His big fat dream is to become a sky pirate and have big fat crazy sky pirate adventures; Vaan is made of the boyishly spirited, and when the day gets down and dirty, the combined might of his and Penelo's almost carefree approach tends to give heart to the situation.

Vaan's dreams of becoming a sky pirate are granted in part by Balthier's willingness to teach the trade, which comes to term in a relatively desperate manner-- Balthier and Fran abandon ship to take care of some sacrifically flavoured destructive business aboard en enemy airship, thus entrusting Balthier's own to Vaan.

There's the clever in him, which Balthier praises; there's also the clever silly, which everybody just acknowledges in the use of propaganda for great justice. ("HAY GUYS I'M BASCH LOLZ.") And then there's the strains of rage that can only take him so far-- Vaan has a bit to go before reconciling with his brother's death; the grief and anger are still very fresh for him, and binds him not unlike the manner in which Ashe is bound. He comes to terms with them, though, setting his goal for a brighter Dalmasca, which in turn helps Ashe make a little more of her peace with Rasler's death.

That is not to say that he can't take a serious stand on two feet and running. With all the crazy, kingdom-shattering times flying some thousand miles above his common streetminded head, Vaan nevertheless fights the fight in front of him; his voice is also one of those that give a measure of strength to Ashe, flighty as Vaan may seem in other situations.

MIST KNACKS: Red Spiral, White Whorl, Pyroclasm
BEST EQUIPPED WITH: Light Armour, Heavy Armour; Daggers, Swords, Ninja Swords, Bows
STRENGTHS: Vaan tags up some nice stats all around, but his major attributes tends to be speed and attack power-- better to emphasize both. He's not a bad mage, either, but there's definitely better in company for the choosing.
